Puff the Magic Dragon

Puff the Magic Dragon lived by the sea,
and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee

Little Jackie Paper, loved that raskel Puff
and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.
A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
painted wings and giant’s rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened Jackie Paper came no more
and Puff that Mighty Dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

You have no idea how much that last part about little boys not living forever hurts when you have a little boy who at 6 months old already seems to be growing up too fast. When I sing that song to Noah, I choke up just a little when I sing that part.

I know that he’s only 6 months old and I have a lot of his growing up to live through yet, but maybe that’s what’s the scariest part. I’ve only just begun the journey. I’m certainly excited about watching him grow up, but I fear the day when he stops being a little boy and doesn’t want to play with POP the magic dragon.

6 month post from Dad

Well, here is a message from Dad. Noah is almost 6 months old now, and it’s incredible how short the time seems. It makes me want to slow time down as much as possible. We put the finishing touches on Noah’s room this weekend with some much needed shelves to store the plethora of playthings that Noah is already accumulating.

Noah is starting to get up on his hands and knees and rock back and forth. That is until he spies something he wants to get and lifts a hand to reach for it. Then he falls over and rolls on to his back. I think he’d be crawling by now if it wasn’t for him always having one hand in his mouth. That makes it hard to keep your balance.

Everyday, I am just amazed at the new things that he’s learning. I’d like to say he’s learning things like Shakespeare and advanced mathematics, but instead it’s usually things like eating his toes and blowing raspberries. Lofty achievements non the less. All he has to do is flash us a smile, and we think he’s the cutest baby in the world. Which he is of course.

Well, that’s all for now, we’re off to meet cousin Samuel for his baptism, so there’ll be some comparison pictures no doubt. Be sure and check them out.

Noah has arrived

Well, all of the waiting is over. We had Noah on Wednesday October 3rd and 12:01 in the morning. That’s just after midnight. He weighed 7 pounds and 1 ounce and was 20 inches long.

He’s got long legs and arms, and big feet. He really is the cutest thing though. He’s a great eater already, and we’re having no troubles breast feeding him. Both he and Sharon are doing fine. We’ll be bringing him home Friday morning.

Sharon was having contractions as early as Monday afternoon, and after one false trip Monday night, and a lot of contractions Tuesday, we went in Tuesday night around 7:00. After all that, it only took 5 hours to get him out, and only 40 minutes of that was pushing. Sharon did great!

Well, I have to get back to the hospital and check on Sharon and Noah. Be sure to check out the new pictures in Noah’s album, and read Sharon’s diary entry on 9/24 to get some sense of our frustrations leading up to this.

We’ll get more pictures and stuff up once we get back home. Tell all your friends to come see our cute baby! 🙂

We’re having a baby!

There, I said it. I still can’t believe it, but I said it. We are having a baby. Wow, it gets easier each time. B-A-B-Y. Wow, easy!
D-A-D . . . oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into. OK, calm down. You can do this. It’s just a small human. A small human that is going to learn half of all it knows from you. A small human that will look to you for all the answers; look to you to know how to act, how to throw a ball, how to play the trombone. . . . I need to sit down.

That’s pretty much what I went through when Sharon, my wife, told me that she was pregnant. It just takes awhile for something like that to sink in. Sure you know it will happen someday, but you’re just never prepared. So lately, I’ve been shopping for strollers and playpens and anything and everything else that this new baby will need. We’re only in our 12th week, but it all seems to be coming so fast. There is so much to do. I need to repaint the office as the baby’s room, move my office into the basement, finish a room in the basement for my office. Maybe that should be in reverse order.

I really am excited about this. The longer I think about it, the more excited I get. The more I can’t wait for it to get here. Our big decision right now is do we want to find out what gender it is. We go back and forth on this. One day it’s a definite yes, the next it’s a definite no. Then we just don’t have a clue. It will probably come down to the last minute and we’ll just go with our gut. Then we’ll post the picture online and let everyone else figure it out for themselves.

Yesterday we heard the heartbeat. This thing is only about 4 inches long and it has a heartbeat. It’s incredible. It’s going like a rocket to. You can hear both Sharon and the babies at the same time. Sharon’s is a slow steady “thump-thump thump-thump”. The baby is going crazy “tick-a-tick-a-tick-a”. Almost like it’s saying “come-on-come-on-come-on”. It brings it a little closer to home to hear that heartbeat. Incredible, 11 weeks ago this thing was a single cell. One cell and now it’s got a heartbeat. The miracle of life. God has an excellent sense of drama.

Well, this is probably enough for the first entry in our baby diary. I’ll write more later. See ya.
